Woman Choosing a Pre-Paid Plan Article from CellPhoneSavings.orgCell Phone Privacy

Many people in today's technology-driven world have taken it for granted that the idea of personal privacy became obsolete sometime around the death of disco. With the Internet, wireless devices and countless satellite services reaching into our homes and places of business, it just seems like a foregone conclusion that someone somewhere is monitoring pretty much everything we do. That grim assessment should not be enough to deter you from taking advantage of all the myriad benefits that an excellent cell phone can offer. However, it does behoove you to educate yourself about the many interrelated issues related to cell phone privacy. Perhaps the first valuable step that you can take on this journey is to separate fact from myth. There is no doubt that some of the rampant speculations made about cell phone privacy in recent years are tinged with insupportable paranoia. At the same time, it would be foolish to assume that no legitimate threats to cell phone privacy exist.

On top of the average cell phone user's list of concerns is the topic of eavesdropping. Specifically, people want to know if it's possible for someone to listen in on personal cell phone calls. While this is a possibility, the chances of it impacting you are minimal at best. The current crop of digital cell phones are nearly impossible to monitor by the general public, criminal elements or any nongovernmental investigative agency. That's the good news. However, when law enforcement operates with the overt cooperation of a wireless carrier based upon the issuance of a warrant, eavesdropping becomes very easy to do. Rest assured that even in this case, it would have to be done by tapping in at the telephone's individual switch level, not over the air. So, the chances of your calls being tapped (unless you're the direct target of an active investigation) are infinitesimal.

The most common types of digital phones use a smart chip that renders them very difficult to monitor over the air. These phones employ a solid encryption scheme that encodes voice traffic flowing between the phone itself and the cell site. Two people communicating with each other, each using a smart chip phone, can be assured of their privacy to a very high degree of certainty. Older cell phones of the analog design, on the contrary, a scanning radio or another cell phone can easily monitor. This becomes a potential issue when you're using a digital phone without a smart chip that defaults to analog mode when you leave the digital service area. Most recent digital mobiles will provide a signal when they default to analog, but not all of them do.

Another thing to consider is the use of "talk and toss" phones. You can purchase these prepaid phones at a supermarket. If using one of these devices, make sure it is a digital model. Finally, there is the issue of a particular brand of spyware known as "Vaporware" that has some consumers concerned. The website that sells this product claims it can intercept digital call, but you must customize it to the cellular radio standards of a particular nation. This type of equipment is illegal in the United States. Therefore, your chances of someone victimizing you using Vaporware with nefarious intent are too small to worry you. There are many other things you'd do better to fret over, like the price of a drink in most trendy bars these days.
